How to Prepare for a National Bail Conference | PBUS 2027
The 2027 PBUS Professional Bail Agents Conference is shaping up to be the largest in Association history. What you do before you arrive, and how you conduct yourself once you are there, will determine what you take home.
The excitement is building for the 2027 PBUS Professional Bail Agents Conference, March 21–23, at the Sahara Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. There is a question every professional bail agent should consider before making the trip: How do you prepare to get the most out of a national conference?
Preparation begins before you ever leave home. Arrive early and arrive rested. Give yourself time to settle in, get your bearings, and be ready when the first session begins. A national conference is an investment in your business, your professional development, and the future of professional surety bail. Treat it accordingly.
Pack to Represent Your Professionalism
How we dress at a national conference demonstrates who we are, not simply as a group of bail agents, but as members of a serious, state-licensed profession. Proper attire is not blue jeans and a bail bonds T-shirt. Business casual should be the minimum standard during scheduled conference activities, and shorts should never be worn during meetings or educational sessions. We cannot expect others to respect our professional standing if we are unwilling to demonstrate it ourselves.
Know What to Bring
Come fully equipped to work, learn, and engage. Notepads, laptops or tablets, pens with extra ink refills, business cards, and a good insulated coffee cup are practical necessities for several days of meetings, educational presentations, and discussions. The most important thing you bring will not fit in your suitcase: open-mindedness. You are going to hear ideas, approaches, and solutions that may be different from the way things are done in your state. Come prepared to consider them before you even set foot on site.
Registration, Credentials & Meal Options
Register early. Conference organizers must plan for seating, meals, refreshments, staffing, and the many details required to accommodate a large gathering. Early registration allows the Association to prepare properly. When you arrive, obtain your conference credentials immediately. Registration is required, and security will not permit access to restricted conference areas without the appropriate credentials.
Capitalize on Conference Meals
You will also have the option of purchasing conference meals, which is strongly recommended. Some of the most productive conversations at national conferences take place around the dining table. I make it a practice to sit with different members at each meal. Introduce yourself. Ask questions. Listen to what others are experiencing in their states. Build friendships and exchange business cards. You should have business cards available throughout the conference because you never know when an introduction might develop into a valuable professional relationship.
The Golden Rule: NO WAR STORIES
During those conversations, remember that everyone brings knowledge and experience to the table. The objective is to share information, learn from one another, and discover ways to strengthen our individual businesses and the profession. There is, however, one rule every attendee should follow. NO WAR STORIES.
We have all heard the familiar introduction, “This one time I wrote a bail bond.” We have all been there and done that. Nobody needs to spend twenty minutes listening to another agent describe a routine experience that contributes nothing to the discussion.
Our time together is limited, and there are far more important subjects demanding our attention. Tell us what is happening in your state. What problems are you encountering? What legislation is being considered? What court procedures are working, and which ones need attention? Have you discovered a solution that might benefit agents elsewhere? Those are conversations worth having because they produce information we can take home and put to work.
Defining Real Networking
Networking is not simply collecting business cards or shaking hands with people you already know. It is building relationships through meaningful exchanges that strengthen our individual knowledge and our collective ability to address problems. We need to leave Las Vegas with practical ideas, stronger state associations, and a greater commitment to working together as one force with one voice.
Active Participation & Volunteering
There is more to conference attendance than networking. There is active participation. Volunteer and ask where help is needed. Introduce yourself to PBUS leadership and the people serving on committees. Become involved in discussions and look for opportunities to contribute. You may possess a particular skill, experience, or idea that could make a significant difference to our collective effort. You may be the missing key to solving a problem, but nobody will discover what you can contribute if you remain on the sidelines.
Follow Through on Your Commitments
At a national conference, time is limited. Not every conversation can be finished before the next session begins, and that is why follow-up matters. When you take notes, keep a list of the areas that will require you to follow up. I often offer to send sample legislation to agents from other states, and I set reminders three days out to make sure I keep my word. Having a laptop with me allows me to take care of some of that work while I am still at the conference.
Follow-up is also about respect. We are there to help others succeed, and if one of us succeeds, we all can.
Work Hard, Play Hard: The Stakes Have Never Been Higher
Everyone knows Las Vegas is an amazing city, with tremendous opportunities for entertainment, dining, and relaxation. The conference schedule provides time away from official activities to enjoy those opportunities. Take advantage of them. But when the opening bell rings and the scheduled meetings begin, our attention must turn to the business of professional surety bail.
Our profession is facing serious challenges across the country. Legislative proposals, changing court practices, and organized efforts to eliminate professional surety bail are affecting agents and businesses in numerous states. These are not problems we can afford to ignore, and they cannot be addressed effectively when everyone is working independently.
The 2027 conference will bring together people who understand these challenges from different perspectives. We will hear presentations, examine issues, exchange information, and discuss possible solutions. Some days will be long. We will get tired. But consider what is at stake.
For many of us, professional surety bail is more than an occupation. It is a business we have built, an investment we have made, and a livelihood that supports our families and employees. The possibility of being forced into retirement because our profession failed to organize and defend itself should never be an acceptable outcome.
When the conference ends, every attendee should leave with something of value. Not simply photographs, souvenirs, or a stack of business cards, but knowledge, relationships, and plans that can make a difference back home. What we accomplish after the conference matters just as much as what we hear during it.
“We Want You”
There is a familiar image of Uncle Sam pointing directly at the American public with the words, “I Want You.” That message is just as appropriate for our profession today. We want you. We need your knowledge, your ideas, your participation, and your willingness to help build a stronger national organization. The future of professional surety bail requires more than people who pay membership dues and attend conferences. It requires the personal responsibility and active commitment of every single agent in the room.
Come prepared. Dress professionally. Keep an open mind. Make new friends. Learn something useful. Volunteer your time. And when you return home, put what you learned to work.
